DEFENSE BASE ACT LAWYER

The Defense Base Act is an extension of the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act that offers compensation and medical benefits to civilian workers employed outside the United States on military bases or under U.S. government contracts related to public works and national defense.

The Defense Base Act applies to the following employment activities:

• Working for private employers on U.S. military bases or any lands used by the U.S. for military purposes outside the U.S., including U.S. Territories and possessions.
• Working on public work contracts with any U.S. government agency, including construction and service contracts related to national defense or war efforts outside the U.S.
• Working on contracts funded by the U.S. under the Foreign Assistance Act, typically involving the cash sale of military equipment, materials, and services to allied nations, when the work is performed outside the U.S.
• Working for American employers providing welfare or similar services for the Armed Forces outside the U.S., such as the USO.

If any of these criteria are met, all workers involved in these activities, regardless of nationality, are covered by the Defense Base Act.
